National Biscuit Day

Celebrating biscuits on National Biscuit Day

National Biscuit Day occurs annually on May 29 annually in the UK.

Its celebrated in Britain because the Americans call there scones biscuits and their biscuits cookies!

Yes I know I call mine cookies but the are technically biscuits and Biscuit Doodle Doo doesn’t have the same ring to it ! :)

Biscuits are baked in a variety of shapes but usually round. Typically they are sweetened and come in lots of flavours including chocolate, fruity, ginger, or cinnamon.

If you are like me you may also like crackers which are savoury.

A bit of history about National Biscuit Day

Seamen looked for something nutritious and long-lasting and over time this eventually led to the baking of foods for a more reliable longer lasting source of food.

A long time ago Doctors recommended that biscuits be eaten daily for sustenance to avoid illness.

Bakers tried to create the hardest biscuits possible because over time biscuits naturally go soft. When baked hard, biscuits could be stored for years without spoiling as long as they were kept dry.

It was Huntley & Palmers who, in 1831, invented the decorative biscuit tin and this meant biscuits could be distributed all over the world. By 1900, Huntley & Palmers biscuits had been sold in 172 countries, demonstrating their global reach. They really led the way and now each country has its own national biscuit treasures.

In 1891 Cadbury actually patented the covering of biscuits in chocolate and the McVities digestive, one of my favourites (along with malted milk) was made a year later.

In Britain we are know to eat the most biscuits. Reportedly we about 500 biscuits a year! Actually thats only one or two each day so probably about right?

Here at Cookie Doodle Doo we can bake that many in a few days!

How will you celebrate National Biscuit Day?

Why not get your biscuit recipes out and check your store cupboard to see if you have all the ingredients? Go on! Bake a few and enjoy with a lovely cup of tea or coffee whichever is your favourite.

Don’t want to bake – Just eat some!

Nowadays they don’t say “A biscuit a day keeps the doctors away” but you could imagine that a nice Hob Nob is good for your indigestion couldn’t you?

Share the spirit of National Biscuit Day on your socials (Facebook or Instagram etc) with the hashtag #NationalBiscuitDay.

Don’t forget to share some homemade recipes with your followers, friends and family or better still ask for their recipes especially ones you remember enjoying when you visited them for a cuppa and a chat. Everyone has a favourite recipe.

We have our sugar cookie recipe that’s tried and tested with a vanilla flavour which is ideal without the decoration with a cuppa but even better with the delicious lemon flavoured Royal Icing.

Here are some facts I found online - True or false?

The relationship between biscuits and tea was made popular in the era of World War II.

Biscuits are delicious.

Baking biscuits is always an opportunity to bond with family, as well as with friends. It’s an opportunity to have fun and share your baking skills.

Biscuits contain some fibre and protein which aid digestion. It’s a great snack after a full meal!

I think they are all true except I’m not sure I have room for a biscuit after a full meal unless they are thinking to replace pudding with a biscuit?
